Why the Honey Bee is Critical to the Food on our Tables

And there may be no more vivid example of how this works than the Honey Bee. Bees drink nectar from plants to survive. As they are drinking this nectar, pollen—the male reproductive organ of the plant—is transferred onto the tiny hairs of the bee.

See, the flower doesn’t give up the pollen easily. In many parts of the world, where bees are scarce, people have to extract pollen from the flower by hand. This is an extremely time consuming and labor intensive process that requires special tools. These tools are handheld and vibrate extremely quickly, which releases the pollen from the flower, where it can be deposited into another flower.
One of the reasons why bees are so special is that they naturally vibrate near this same frequency.
As the bee moves from plant to plant, pollen is deposited onto the stigma—the female reproductive organ of the plant. Because of their unique evolutionary characteristics, and ability to extract pollen from flowers, bees truly are nature’s perfect pollinator!
So by taking care of its need to eat and survive, honey bees are directly responsible for the birth of plants all across the world! In fact, 70% of the plants that humans eat are directly pollinated by bees. Because of this beautiful symbiotic relationship between plants and bees, we get fresh, delicious, and nutritious produce on our tables.
Farmers Panic As Bee Population Continues to Sharply Decline
Because of how vital honey bees are to LIFE as a whole, scientists are alarmed by a recent trend: the bee population is sharply declining, year-over-year.
For most of human history, bees were mostly known for their creation of honey – the delicious, all-natural sweetener most of us love has been used by humans for over 9,000 years (at least).
Yet it was only recently that we learned we had a BIG problem…
In 1990, the loss of bees was noticed to be dramatic and far beyond what anyone expected. After studying the problem and realizing the sheer magnitude of it, scientists coined a new phrase to describe it: Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD).
Still, as a society we did very little to stop it. As a result, the problem has only increased and at this point, we may be in the most dire straits yet.
So how bad is the problem, really? Here’s what the Obama Whitehouse Archives says…
“The number of managed honey bee colonies in the United States has declined steadily over the past 60 years, from 6 million colonies (beehives) in 1947 to 4 million in 1970, 3 million in 1990, and just 2.5 million today. Given the heavy dependence of certain crops on commercial pollination, reduced honey bee populations pose a real threat to domestic agriculture.”
We know the bee population is declining. We know this poses a major threat to the very thing that keeps us alive… our food supply. Yet what we don’t know exactly is why this is happening.

The Obvious… But Incomplete… Answer
In the post World War 2 United States, farmers started moving away from traditional techniques and towards mass production. Instead of growing a huge variety of different crops on the same land, they switched to growing a huge volume of one or two crops only.
This practice is called “monoculture”, and it directly goes against the defense systems nature has evolved for various plants and animals.
As a result of this monoculture, new parasites and bugs began to sprout up and eat the crops before they could be harvested. So, in order to combat this brand-new problem, farmers had to adapt. Their solution? Pesticides.
In particular, a pesticide family called “neonicotinoids” proved extremely effective in killing these bugs and parasites. At the same time, they could be washed off of food and led to no noticeable problems in humans (that they knew of).
The problem? These pesticides were not only deadly to parasites. They were deadly to all lifeforms in general. Including… especially… bees. When the bees went to pollinate the plants, they picked up the pesticides as well. This killed many of the bees, and even led to the pesticides spreading to the hives, where even more bees perished.
Once it was discovered that neonicotinoids killed bees, the European Union banned them. But while certain states in the USA have also acted to ban these bee-killing pesticides, on a federal level, no significant action has been taken. Within just one week of spraying plants with neonicotinoids, half of a bee colony can be completely wiped out!
Initially, these loses were predicted to be manageable. And it was said that the bee colonies would recover in the coming months. However, as time went on, that turned out to be false. Finally, it’s become clear: the mass spraying of pesticides causes PERMANENT damage to any colony affected.
The Problem Is Complex How Could hemp Save the Honey Bees with So Many Factors
But the problem with bees is that there isn’t just ONE problem. In fact, a whole host of factors are working against their survival. And unfortunately, for the most part, human expansion is the root cause.
For example, bees have a strong sense of smell. This leads them directly to wildflowers and other plants that give them nectar. However, new studies are showing that air pollution directly interferes with this sense of smell. As a result, bees are having much more difficulty finding food. They need to work harder, and many are unable to find flowers at all. This hampers their ability to survive and pollinate the plants we need to survive.
A Species Under Siege
Although pesticides are still being used—and still killing bees—awareness is growing. Farmers all across the world are limiting their use and it’s likely that this positive trend will continue. But how could hemp save the honey bee?
Unfortunately, pesticides are just the tip of the iceberg. And once again, we can trace the problem back to monoculture.
Bees require a certain type of plant to eat and reproduce. These include wildflowers that are often cleared away and destroyed when a major agricultural farm moves into the area. Instead of replanting these flowers, farmers will often plant acre upon acre of a single crop, such as corn or wheat.
The problem is, bees don’t get food from these “cash crops”! So as more and more farms move in, the bees’ habitat is destroyed. There are no flowers for the bees to pollinate. And nowhere for them to go other than artificial beehives.
These cash crops generate MUCH more revenue than planting a perfect habitat for bees. So, because of the economics of farming and feeding hundreds of millions of people, bees continue to die off in mass year after year.
It gets worse.
Upsetting Nature’s Delicate Balance

By now I’m hoping you get the idea of how monoculture can snowball into the total transformation and loss of a natural habitat. This makes it impossible for the ecosystem that previously existed to survive.
Yet at the same time, I just told you that bees are required for 70% of the total plant food supply on earth. So if we need bees so badly, how come it’s hard for them to find food?
Let me illustrate it with an example.
One of bee’s favorite source of pollen comes from Almonds. Almond plants contain a lot of protein, which bees desperately need. Almonds, like most plants, have their season. During the season, the seeds are planted, sprout, grow, and are pollinated. When the season ends, the plants die off until the next season comes around.
Now, with monoculture, we don’t have almond plants scattered in with wildflowers as would be found naturally. Instead, we have entire super-massive almond farms… that ONLY grow almonds.
This means that the bees have an incredible food supply… but only for a part of the year. As soon as almond season is done, the bees have no more food left.
As a result, we’ve had to develop commercial beekeeping practices that, once again, lead to the loss of millions of bees per year. Farmers truck in bees during almond season. And when almond season is over, they load them back into trucks and take them somewhere else.
In this way, we’ve almost completely disrupted the bee’s natural ability to survive and thrive. Bees have gone from living in a habitat where there is always abundant food… allowing them to pollinate freely and create new, diverse life… to an artificial reality where they are carted around to create whatever ONE plant we need them to at that time.
Could Hemp Save The Honey Bee?
As bad as this problem is, I wish I could tell you it only effects bees. But I can’t. Because monoculture affects every single lifeform in an ecosystem. And while bees are our most effective pollinators, they aren’t the only ones.

Unfortunately, just like Bees, we’re also seeing these animal populations decline due to the same causes mentioned above.
Why Can’t We Just Stop Monoculture?
Thus far, this article has been pretty doom and gloom. And it seems like it can all be traced back to monoculture. While that may be true, the solution is not as simple as stopping monoculture.
Monoculture drastically improves the efficiency of farming. It’s made it possible for us to lift billions of people out of poverty and give them the food they need to survive. It’s also by far the most profitable and easiest form of farming.
So with monoculture, we threaten nature itself. Yet without monoculture, we put potentially billions of lives at risk of starvation.
Now… if only there was a monoculture plant that was incredibly lucrative… resistant to parasites… that bees loved. If such a plant existed, it could theoretically solve the major core issues I’ve discussed so far.

By now you know how monoculture leads to bees having an overabundance of food in one season, and a complete lack of it in the next.
